How to automate Instagram DMs without breaking Instagram's rules
If your Instagram posts do well, your DMs fill up with the same questions: price, size, stock, delivery. Answer them a few hours late and many of those buyers have moved on. Instagram DM automation fixes that, as long as you do it the way Meta allows. Here's how it works.
What you need
- An Instagram professional account, Business or Creator. Switching is free in the Instagram app under Settings → Account type and tools.
- A tool that uses Meta's official Instagram messaging API. Depending on how it connects, you may also need to link a Facebook Page.
- In the Instagram app, turn on Allow access to messages under Settings → Messages and story replies → Message controls → Connected tools.
Avoid tools that ask for your Instagram password or run on a phone or browser extension. They break Instagram's terms, and accounts that use them get restricted.
What you can automate
Replies to DMs
When someone messages you, AI can answer straight away from your catalogue and FAQs: prices, sizes, stock, delivery times, returns. When the person is ready to buy, or asks something AI doesn't know, the chat goes to your team with the whole conversation.
Comment-to-DM
Ask people to comment a keyword like "PRICE" on a post or reel, and send each of them a private reply with the details and a link. Instagram allows one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment.
Story replies and mentions
Replies and reactions to your stories arrive as DMs, so they can be answered the same way. Mentions of your account in other people's stories show up too, which is a good moment to say thank you.
Ice breakers and quick replies
Set up a few questions people can tap when they open a chat with you for the first time, like "Track my order" or "Size help", so they don't have to type.
The rules to know
- Reply only to people who contacted you first. Instagram doesn't allow cold messages or bulk DMs to followers.
- The 24-hour window. Businesses can reply freely for 24 hours after a person's last message. A person on your team can reply for up to 7 days using Meta's human agent option, for things like a refund that takes time.
- No broadcasts. If you want to message many customers at once, use WhatsApp broadcasts or email to people who opted in.
- Be clear it's automated when it matters. Let people reach a person easily, and don't pretend a bot is someone it isn't.
Setting it up with AICustomerPilot
- Connect Instagram by signing in with Meta and picking your professional account.
- Add your website and products, so AI knows your prices, sizes and policies.
- Choose what AI handles: DMs, story replies, and the posts or reels you want comment-to-DM on, with their keywords.
- Decide when AI hands over: a buyer ready to pay, a complaint, or any question it isn't sure about.
Every person who messages you is saved as a customer, so you can see which posts and reels actually bring in sales. Read more about Instagram DM automation.
