How to get the WhatsApp Business API in India (2026 guide)
If more than a handful of customers message your business on WhatsApp every day, the free WhatsApp Business app starts to hold you back. It lives on one phone, there's no shared inbox, nothing is automated, and broadcasts only reach people who saved your number. The WhatsApp Business API (Meta now calls it the WhatsApp Business Platform) fixes all of that. Here's exactly how to get it in India, step by step.
Before you start
Have these ready. They're what slows most people down.
- Your business's legal name, exactly as it appears on your GST certificate, Udyam registration or incorporation papers
- A live website on your own domain that shows the same business name, what you sell and how to contact you
- A business email address on that domain (like hello@yourbrand.in), so Meta can confirm you own it
- A phone number that can receive an SMS or a voice call, which you'll use for WhatsApp
Tip: most rejections happen because the name on your website doesn't match your documents. Fix that before you apply and you'll save days.
Step 1: Create a Meta business portfolio
Everything on WhatsApp's business side sits inside a Meta business portfolio (what used to be called Business Manager). If you already run Facebook or Instagram ads, you probably have one. If not, create it at business.facebook.com with your legal business name and business email.
Step 2: Verify your business
Business verification is how Meta confirms you're a real company. In your portfolio, open Settings → Security centre → Business verification and upload one document that shows your legal name and address. For Indian businesses the easiest are:
- GST registration certificate
- Udyam (MSME) registration certificate
- Certificate of incorporation, for companies and LLPs
- Shop and establishment licence, for some sole proprietors
Meta then checks your phone number, email or domain. Verification usually takes one to five working days. You can start using the API before you're verified, but you can only message a limited number of new people a day until you are.
Step 3: Choose your phone number
You have two options:
- A new number. The simplest route: nothing to migrate, and you keep your personal WhatsApp untouched.
- Your existing number. Customers keep messaging the number they already know. Depending on your provider, you can either move the number to the API completely, or use Meta's coexistence option, which keeps the WhatsApp Business app working on the same number alongside the API.
Landlines work too: choose a voice call instead of an SMS when Meta sends the code.
Step 4: Get your display name approved
Your display name is the business name customers see. Meta reviews it against your website and documents. It gets approved fastest when it:
- Matches the brand name on your website exactly
- Isn't a generic phrase like "Best Deals" or "Online Shopping"
- Uses normal capitalisation, without emojis or extra punctuation
Step 5: Connect through a provider
Meta doesn't give you an inbox. You use the API through a provider, a business solution provider, or a tool like AICustomerPilot that connects directly through Meta's official sign-in. The connection usually takes about 15 minutes:
- Sign in with Facebook and pick your business portfolio
- Add or choose your WhatsApp Business account and phone number
- Enter the code Meta sends to the number
- Submit your first message templates for approval
Once connected, your whole team can reply from one number, AI can answer common questions, and you can send broadcasts to customers who opted in.
What it costs
Connecting to the API is free. Meta charges for each delivered template message, at a rate that depends on the category and the recipient's country. For Indian numbers, the rates from 1 October 2026 are:
| Message type | Meta rate in India | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | ₹0.8631 | Offers, launches, cart reminders |
| Utility | ₹0.115 | Order and delivery updates |
| Authentication | ₹0.115 | One-time passwords |
| Service | First 1,000 a month free, then ₹0.115 | Your replies when a customer messages first |
GST is usually added on top. Your provider's own plan is extra; with AICustomerPilot, Meta's charges are passed on at cost. Work out your monthly bill with the WhatsApp API cost calculator, or read WhatsApp API pricing, explained.
Common reasons for rejection
- The website is missing, under construction, or shows a different business name
- The display name doesn't match the brand on your website
- The documents are blurry, expired or in a name that doesn't match
- The business sells something WhatsApp's commerce policy doesn't allow, such as some medicines, alcohol or adult products
Rejected? Fix the mismatch Meta points out and submit again. Most businesses get through on the second try.
