WhatsApp vs SMS for order updates in India: cost, read rates and setup
Every order you ship sends a few messages: confirmed, shipped, out for delivery, delivered. In India most businesses started with SMS, but more and more are moving these updates to WhatsApp. Here's how the two compare, and when each makes sense.
At a glance
| SMS | ||
|---|---|---|
| Cost per message | Usually around ₹0.10 to ₹0.25, depending on provider and volume | ₹0.115 per utility message, plus GST |
| Setup | DLT registration of your sender ID and every template | Meta business verification and approved templates |
| What it can show | 160 characters of text per SMS | Text, images, documents and up to 10 buttons |
| Customer replies | Rare; replies to most business SMS don't reach anyone | Two-way chat, answered by your team or AI |
| Read receipts | No | Delivered and read status for every message |
| Reaches | Every phone, no internet needed | People with WhatsApp, which is most smartphone users in India |
Cost
At ₹0.115 per utility message, a WhatsApp order update costs about the same as a transactional SMS, and less than a long SMS that splits into two. A typical order with three updates costs around ₹0.35 on WhatsApp before GST. You can check your own numbers in the WhatsApp API cost calculator.
Where WhatsApp gets expensive is marketing, at ₹0.8631 a message. Keep order updates free of offers and "shop again" lines so they stay in the utility category.
Setup
SMS in India needs DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) registration under TRAI's rules: you register your business, your sender ID (header) and each message template with a telecom operator's DLT portal before you can send.
WhatsApp needs a Meta business portfolio, business verification and approved templates. Most templates are approved within minutes. Our guide on getting the WhatsApp Business API in India covers each step.
What customers do with the message
This is where WhatsApp pulls ahead:
- They read it. Your updates sit next to messages from friends and family, not between bank OTPs and spam.
- They can reply. "Can you deliver after 6?" or "I want to change my address" reaches your team, or AI answers it straight away.
- They can tap. Buttons like "Track order", "Confirm COD order" or "Talk to us" do the work without a link.
Cash on delivery confirmation
For Indian D2C brands, the biggest win is confirming cash-on-delivery orders before they ship. Send a WhatsApp message with "Confirm" and "Cancel" buttons right after the order. Orders that are cancelled or never confirmed don't ship, which cuts the cost of returned parcels. AICustomerPilot does this automatically with Shopify and WooCommerce.
When SMS still makes sense
- Customers without WhatsApp. Use SMS as a fallback when a WhatsApp message can't be delivered.
- Very simple OTPs where you already have DLT set up and nothing else to say.
- Feature-phone audiences in some rural markets.
Our recommendation
Send order updates on WhatsApp first and fall back to SMS when WhatsApp can't deliver. You pay about the same per message, and in return customers actually read your updates, reply when something's wrong, and confirm COD orders before you spend money shipping them.
